You might be wondering what these characters (苏可馨) are. Let’s listen to the pronunciation of my name:
Well, here is a breakup of my name:
- 苏 (Sū): a Chinese surname,
- 可 (Kě): can, able to,
- 馨 (Xīn): fragrant.
As you may already know, one Chinese character can have multiple sounds and meanings. For example, the character 苏 (Sū) also means:
- Perilla (Chinese basil),
- Jiangsu (江苏, Jiāngsū) – a Chinese province,
- Suzhou (苏州, Sūzhōu) – a city in Jiangsu province, and
- Soviet Union (苏维埃, Sūwéi’āi).
可 has two sounds:
- 可爱 (Kě’ài) – cute,
- 可汗 (Kè hán) – Khan.
Can you guess the meaning of my name?
My name means cute and fragrant. 🙂
Btw, most of the Chinese kids also have nicknames (小名, Xiǎo míng). My nickname is 诺诺 (Nuò Nuò).
- 诺 (Nuò): promise, approve.
There is also a long Chinese word –
- 诺诺连声 (Nuò nuò liánshēng) : keep saying yes.
Although I have grown up, my family members, especially the elders still call me Nuo Nuo. 🙂
How can you call me?
Since I am your teacher, you can call me Teacher Su (苏老师, Sū lǎoshī).
Well, this page is not intended to be a Chinese lesson. I just wanted to share a few interesting things about myself. I will have a book coming up explaining how Chinese people choose names.
I will be teaching you Chinese via this website. I am also integrating audio for the Chinese characters. Stay tuned.
I have organized hundred of free lessons for you – each lesson provides you simplified Chinese characters, pinyin, English and audio.
