This is a very famous Chinese idiom. This idiom is so simple and very easy to understand.
- 以 (yǐ): with
- 少 (shǎo): less
- 胜 (shèng): win
- 多 (duō): more
When you combine these four characters, you get 以少胜多, meaning “with less win more”.

The idiom has been used since ancient times. For example, during the Three Kingdoms (三国) period, just about 20,000 soldiers of the Wu State (吴国) defeated the 300,000 strong army of the Chu State (楚国).
Hence, this event is an example of 以少胜多 (yǐ shǎo shèng duō): with less win more.
